A neighbourhood library in Barcelona with a spatial organization conceptually borrowed from the plaza - the most important ingredient of Spanish outdoor public space.

However, the notion of just "public space" does not do the plaza justice - far more important than just public space, this is the very essence of the city, this is where its life happens.

A number of plazas are distributed all across the city, each one different from another; each a complex environment of components that make them successful (or not) public spaces - location, history, sunlight, greenery, commodities, ease of access, etc. These components and their relationships are used in the spatial organization of the library at every scale: a stacking of plazas into functional zones, a fragmentation of each zone into particular spaces, an atmospheric detailing of each space.
